Finding A Great Minneapolis Wedding Photographer

January 2, 2016

When planning a wedding there are many things you have to coordinate. This list seems to go on and on with no end in sight. Finding a venue, a DJ, a dress, decorations, food and a photographer. It can be overwhelming to say the least. While all those things cohesively make a wedding, a photographer in my opinion, should be at the top of your list.

This is one of the most important days of your life and trust me when I say it will be gone in the blink of an eye. You plan for months, possibly years, and then it’s over in a flash. All the hard work, time and sweat you’ve poured into this day and you’ll be too busy to notice all those sweet little details you added. That’s what having the perfect photographer is for.

You want a Minneapolis wedding photographer who won’t miss those details, one that will notice the hard work that goes into planning a wedding and capture them all. A good wedding photographer will take pictures of your bouquet, but a great wedding photographer will snap a photo of your grandmothers broach you pinned on. A good wedding photographer will get a shot of your first kiss, but a great photographer will capture the way the two of you embrace and the love that mingles there. Those are things you’ll always remember, but to have those things frozen in time is beyond compare.

Other than capturing all of your important moments that day, you have to feel comfortable with your wedding photographer. Without comfort and communication none of those things will be possible. You should be able to talk openly with your photographer about what you want and the feel you want your pictures to have. If they can’t commit your ideas or you don’t love the style of their photos, search for one that has the style you’re looking for. All professional wedding photographers will have portfolios and sample galleries of their previous work (even one’s like me that are just getting started!). While I can’t publish my portfolio on my site, as it was created under photographers, I can show it to you in person!

So, do your research. Luckily the Minneapolis wedding photographer pool is a large one and there are many that are wonderful! Check their samples, their customer reviews and schedule a meet and greet with them. One of my favorites is Dan Oksnevad Photography in Minneapolis. If you love their work and they feel right, book them and book them quickly! Valued wedding photographers fill up fast and you want to make sure you’ve reserved your date and they have ample time to get to know you.

Running A Successful MN Wedding Photography Business

October 18, 2015

Over the past couple years, I have been running my photography business in a very casual way. Now that I want to venture into a career as a MN wedding photographer, I have had to learn a lot about business. In the MN wedding photography business, most photographers focus on what would appear to be obvious with regards to being successful as a wedding photographer; producing the best quality photos. Producing amazing photographs that would make anyone jealous of one’s style and artistry is imperative. However, there is another aspect of the business that most wedding photographers forget about, and it goes beyond advertising, marketing and price point. What could a wedding photographer possibly forget? Having an excellent camera or top editing software on an upgraded computer? No. They forget about the customer service side of the business.

In order to be successful, one must first learn not to over-promise. Over-promising elevates expectations of a client. The client may have expected unedited photos in a period of 4 weeks, and the photographer promises a preview by two weeks. In order to be fully successful, one must make sure they deliver on their promises. Another aspect of over-promising is showing the client unedited photos relatively quickly, and the failing to deliver the edited product in a timely fashion. The “feel good” moment a client has after initially seeing their photos will tide them over for a short period, but the next step is delivering the fully edited photos in a timely manner.

Another customer service issue is communication. A photographer needs to communicate issues that arise along the way which hinders on time delivery of the promised goods. Just as important as not over-promising, is keeping open communication with the client. If the client has an expectation set by the photographer of 6 weeks before seeing edited photos, it should be communicated that the timeline is being extended should the photographer be unable to deliver as scheduled. Over communicating is typically more appreciated than under communicating.

A photographer spends years honing their skills. Rightfully it is believed that one’s photography skill set will land customers. After the initial first impression by the customer, the photographer must also work to maintain a satisfied clientele. Keeping communication lines open and expectations in check, a photographer can run a successful business. In order to maintain a good relationship with the client and have the client do free advertising in the form of word-of-mouth referrals, it is ultimately important to deliver a timely product. A satisfied customer will show their appreciation by referring other clients to the photographer, furthering the success of the business.

The Challenges Of Being A Minneapolis Wedding Photographer

September 2, 2015

Being a Minneapolis wedding photographer involves far more than taking pictures of beautiful brides in their gorgeous gowns. A good wedding photographer needs to know how to bring the best out of the couple getting married, the wedding party and the guests without actually involving herself in the wedding. She captures every moment without interfering with them. Most importantly, she understands the couple’s vision for the wedding and does not push her own ideas on the event. Wedding photography Minneapolis St Paul has a lot to offer, form bold seasons to open country and elegant cityscapes. If you are just starting out as a new Minneapolis wedding photographer, you’re in one of the best cities for it!

There is an entire industry catering to people who are getting married, so couples have no shortage of photographers at their disposal, and this is especially true in Minneapolis. One must stand out from her peers in order to land the job. This requires a tricky balancing act of having a distinct visual style and being willing to make adjustments to make clients happy. She needs to have an instinct for identifying the moments that should be photographed. Unlike in staged photo shoots, there are no do-overs at a wedding. A missed moment is a lost opportunity to take the perfect picture. The couple is paying for mementos of moments that they knew were special as they were experiencing them. Part of taking good candid pictures is being aware that the couple is paying for glimpses at their wedding from the perspectives of their guests. They want to relive their wedding both as they remember it and as they imagine other people do as well.

The photographer also has to have a good understanding of how to get close-up shots during the ceremony without blocking anyone’s view. Countless ceremonies have been rendered less meaningful due to the distractions imposed by conspicuous photographers. It may be necessary to purchase expensive equipment or practice uncomfortable body positions that aid in getting the perfect shot without placing oneself in between the couple and the guests.

There are only a few minutes between the ceremony and the cocktail hour to take posed pictures, so the photographer has to make them count. Many photographers assume that they can spend the entirety of the cocktail hour taking photos, but this would prevent the couple and the wedding party from enjoying this part of the event. Couples often speak of not having been able to eat at their weddings because they were constantly rushing around. Private moments, as beautiful as they are, should only be photographed with permission. The best photographers are able to give their clients the gift of enjoying their own weddings.

I believe that I have come to the point where I have overcome these challenges and I am ready to take Minneapolis wedding photography scene! Ready Minneapolis – here I come!
